*New* Week 21 – Service in the Interest of Others

“Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:4)

God calls us to not only focus on our own needs but also to compassionately care for the needs of others. Compassion goes beyond feeling sympathy; it requires action. Serving others with compassion is an essential part of living out our faith, and when we do, we reflect Christ’s love.

Serving others with compassion can take many forms—whether through helping a neighbor, volunteering, or offering a listening ear. It doesn’t always require grand gestures. Sometimes, the smallest acts of kindness are the ones that make the biggest impact.

Compassion opens our hearts and helps us live as Christ did, loving and serving those around us. Through compassion, we make God’s love tangible to others.

God showed us what true compassion looks like through His Son, Jesus. And

Jesus showed countless examples of selfless service; maybe none illustrated it better than when He washed His disciples’ feet.

When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” (John 13:12-17)

We also should serve others with the same selflessness that Jesus demonstrated. We must look beyond our own needs and seek out ways to bless those around us. We should always be alert with our heads and our hearts on a heavenly swivel and readily armed with the courage we need to act when we see the pain and struggles of others.

Through our actions we shine a light that reflects God’s love and encourages others towards faith and righteousness. As Christians, we have been called to be lights, and when we engage in acts of kindness, compassion, and selflessness, we become beacons of hope and encouragement in a sometimes dark world. Let us strive to be that light, inspiring others to find peace and strength through Christ’s love as we take steps together in faith.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35)

I bet that every one of us has a good friend or a family member who is always right there when we need them… The one you can always count on… The one you can call whenever you need anything… They always seem to be ready with an encouraging word. When they know you’ve fallen, you can bet they’re running to help you up. They’re always the first to forgive and never hold a grudge. And one thing you can be certain of is they are always the first to join your fight.

What gives? Why is it that these people are always at your service and place you so high on their list? We hear these people described all the time as simply being good friends and good servants, and rightfully so, but to me, I like to think it’s so much more. These are people of action—God’s Warriors—people at work for the Lord. They fight for God’s glory as they build His Kingdom here in this world.

Jesus called us to seek ways to serve others, to be ready and willing to respond to their needs. This is the way of life Jesus calls us to—a life that reflects the actions of Jesus.

We love each other because he loved us first. (1 John 4:19)

I want to encourage us all to be the person God made us to be and glorify God with all that you say and that you do.

So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image. (2 Corinthians 3:18)

One day all born-again Christians will be by Jesus’ side in Heaven, but as for today, let us say, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)

The time is now, and the place is here. Act in accordance with how you were created. Act with the love that reflects Jesus love, just as He acted out of love for you.

For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

To God be the GloryThank you, Jesus!
